Hello true believers,

About four years ago, I began a blog series called "Island Boy Public Journal" - basically it was a series of open letters to my home of Prince Edward Island. I began writing during lockdown when I couldn't visit my family or my friends and was more homesick than I've ever been. These embarrassing letters soon took on a life of their own and became a series of live solo shows (I named the cycle "Islandography" because "Island Boy" became a terrible rap duo.)

Four years ago, I stepped away from this to work on my live shows. What an eventful four years it's been: I got married. I began touring. I'm still gronked out on coffee. After a four year hiatus I am back at updating my public journal. Welcome to Soul Coffee.

I want to restart this page because I have a lot to process. I am becoming increasingly aware of how fast life is passing by - this past year specifically was not only eventful, but significant for myself as a person and a professional. Nothing bad, or traumatic or anything like that. Just wonderfully strange and strangely wonderful.

Like, imagine someone pantsed you in public and you're like "what the hell" but then they hand you two hundred dollars and you're like "what?" and they say nothing and just run away. You'd leave away thinking "did that just happen?" and you'd probably want to talk about it a little.

Perhaps at a weekly non-intrusive cadence.

I am going to open about these strange experiences as a means of slowing down and taking stock of the nonsense that matters to me. I intend to be ridiculous and honest and stupid and embarrassing. Like a diary but I am reading it front of the class.

Why Soul Coffee? My favourite part of the day is in the morning when I psych myself up with my first sip of coffee and groggily mutter "onward and upward." That's what I am pouring into this writing.

I don't know who this is for. But if it finds you, I guess you were meant to read it.

See you Sunday mornings, I'll probably be in your junk folder.
